Entrepreneurship

The Small Business Entrepreneurship course provides students with an understanding of computer networks and their operations, as well as a basic understanding of how to maintain and manage computer networks. Such skills provide students with the ability to configure, design and troubleshoot all sizes of networks. Students learn the fundamentals of network design, including how to identify network requirements, and determine the right network architecture. They will be educated on network model requirements, as well as be introduced to local area networks. Students will also be instructed on Internet Protocol and the basics of network routing data. Students will be introduced to wide area networks as well as network security issues. Furthermore, students will learn about network management, which includes monitoring and troubleshooting. Finally, students will learn about network operating systems, and their role in connecting computers and facilitating communications.

Objectives:
  • Learn computer networks and their functions, and how to analyze technical and business goals of a network to meet customer needs effectively.
  • Identify requirements to successfully support network users, devices and applications. Understand network topology and architecture, protocols and local and wide area network services.
  • Identify operation and principles of equipment such as circuits and wire, and of standards like TCP/IP, open system interconnection and high-speed networking.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in data protection and network security requirements; and the security role of tools such as firewalls, routers and virtual private networks.
  • Understand network operating systems and develop the ability to support computer networks.

With regards to these course topics, it is practical for students to familiarize themselves with the fundamentals of computer hardware (laptop and desktop) in addition to desktop operating systems. It is recommended, though not required, that students who are not familiar with these topics be introduced to computer hardware and desktop or workstation operating systems before beginning this course. This includes the examination of hardware devices such as hard drives, motherboards and processing chips, as well as exploring the functions and features of a workstation operating system.
