Business Finance

This course introduces students to the basic structure of the American economy, global economy complexities, as well as the principles, strategies and practices associated with starting, managing or being employed in a business. Through a combination of projects and lessons, students can trace a trajectory of their potential role as workers, executives and consumers in the American economy. From lessons on everything from marketing to writing formal business correspondence, from the fundamental structures and legal definitions of business to the importance and operations of institutions of finance, students will complete this course with a thorough introductory comprehension of the world of business. Students will conduct research, interviews, and write papers on a variety of topics that are designed to enrich their comprehension of the business environment in America. They will also navigate a creative and interactive project spanning the length of the course asking students to engage their imaginations, learning and individual career motivation with course material. The course commences by exploring the business structures and responsibilities and roles of those who aim to manage and lead such enterprises. It is from this baseline that students will be introduced to topics of specific relevance to the emerging global business environment, including: the technology fueling business success, the strength of free market economies, they cyclical nature of business and the economy, financial and hard asset management, as well as the personal skills required to join the business community.

Objectives:
  • Understand the steps to establishing a business.
  • Explore investment capital issues, ethical and legal issues, as well as budgeting.
  • Learn about the people side of business: leadership, group dynamics, human resources.
  • Obtain business communications information.
  • Explore their role in the world of business and how to successfully present themselves.
Course Requirements

Students must have access to Microsoft Word and spreadsheet software. PowerPoint and other presentation software would also be useful to enable them to learn how to give a presentation using this medium.
